studio d'artisan | 5678-doro "amami dorozome" heavyweight check flannel shirt - dark brown
studio d'artisan is back with their latest "amami dorozome" series. the fabric of this beautiful heavyweight flannel was "mud-dyed" in amami oshima, a group of islands north of okinawa, giving the shirt its unique deep earthy tones. the art of mud-dyeing - dorozome - is already over 1300 years old and was originally used to dye natural silk, to be used in the production of kimonos. today, only a few artisans from amami oshima know the complex and tedious dyeing process of dorozome. in this process, the cotton threads are dipped 30 times in a japanese hawthorn "soup" and once in mud. the whole process is then repeated three times. this mud dyeing makes the shirt softer, less wrinkled, more robust and is even said to be resistant to fire and dirt. that’s really special.
