anatomica x wakouwa | deck shoes low off white
wakouwa is a sub-label of the french-japanese brand anatomica and is basically a sneaker line based on the us navy deck shoes of the 1930s. in fact, the orthopaedically shaped last is a detailed reproduction of the original last of a vintage pair of deck shoes from 1938 owned by kinji teramoto. the upper is made from robust american canvas and the vulcanized rubber sole with wave profile offers excellent grip even on wet surfaces. because of this and the simple, elegant design, deck shoes were extremely popular outside the navy among the elite sailing clubs in the hamptons and later among ivy league students. even style icons like john f. kennedy and paul newman were big fans of deck shoes. the name wakouwa, by the way, is a quiet homage to a swiss toy brand from anatomica founder pierre fournier's childhood.
