the br90264 turtle neck sweater by buzz rickson's is part of the "type black" militaria cooperation with science fiction novelist william gibson. gibson designed a fictional black ma-1 jacket from buzz rickson's for his protagonist in his book "pattern recognition", and the idea for an all-black collection was born.
adopted by the u.s. army in the 1930s, this sweater is worn under jackets and coats for insulation. the front and back have vertical knitting, while the shoulders and hem, subject to more movement and strain, feature horizontal knitting. it uses a ribbing knit style similar to the hem ribbing seen on navy leather jackets like the g-1.
