the 8185 sweatshirt by studio d'artisan is something very special. the sturdy yet wonderfully soft cotton fabric is made from yarn spun on japan's oldest ring spinning machine, the “ishikawadai.” it was then woven in wakayama on free-hanging tsuriami looms, whose slow, gravity-fed knitting process produces fabrics of exceptional quality and beauty that cannot be achieved using modern industrial methods. the fabric was then dyed with bengara, a reddish-brown iron oxide pigment extracted from the earth. this is a very environmentally friendly dye that does not use fire, requires only a small amount of water for dyeing, and returns to nature after use.
