jelado | the 2 monkeys sportif bordeaux vachetta
the 2 monkeys is a collaboration between jelado owner yohei goto and former red wing japan representative suzuki michiya with focus on workwear and boots from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
the "sportif“ is inspired by 1920's-1930's french hunting and outdoor boots combined with details borrowed from american designs of the same time. the boots are made in japan from beautiful bordeaux "conceria 800" vacchetta leather with a diamond-shaped grain. vacchetta leather is made according to an old traditional tuscan process that can be traced back to around 800 a.c.. it is very robust and feels quite stiff at the beginning, but with increasing wearing time it adapts more and more to the wearer's foot. the leather has been treated with a blend of oils and so exhibits a “pull up” effect, which means it shows a lightening or discoloration when the leather is stretched or bent. with time these boots develop a unique antiqued, distressed look. reminiscent of native american handcrafts, the moccasin toe is made the traditional way, with two pieces of leather for the side and the top of the boot. the stitching is sewn by hand.
