the al-1 flight jacket was developed by the bureau of naval aviation during the post-war period as a winter flight jacket and was introduced by the navy and marine corps in 1947. the outer fabric is a high-density cotton combed twill, which is supple yet highly wind-resistant. the body lining uses alpaca mohair wool pile, while the sleeves are lined with smooth rayon wool, and inside that, wool flannel is sewn in as insulation. the front features a double closure system with both zipper and buttons for enhanced cold protection. inside, there are pockets on both sides; the left inner pocket has a zipper and can be used even when the front zipper is closed. an adjustable strap is installed at the waist inside the lining for improved fit. additionally, the slash pockets incorporate internal ribbing to block outside air - a rare feature not seen on other jackets. the extensive use of diverse materials and intricate design clearly shows the navy’s deep commitment and passion invested in this jacket.
