the real mccoy's | joe mccoy button down shirt - light blue
the oxford button down shirt has its origins in 19th century scotland, when a scottish mill invented the special weaving technique for the elegant yet robust and durable fabric. to give the name of this new cotton fabric more weight, the idea was born to name it after the four most prestigious universities of the time: harvard, yale, cambridge and oxford. in the end, however, only the "oxford" shirt caught on.
the button-down collar had its origins in polo. to prevent the collar from flapping in the wind while riding, british polo players sewed small buttons onto their shirts to fasten the tips of the collars.
into the 1920s and 30s, the oxford shirt entered college campuses, taking its place among khakis and madras fabrics in the pantheon of ivy league style. the button down shirt by the real mccoy's is based on the shirts of the 1960s, is made in japan from a heavy oxford cotton cloth and can be worn both casually and elegantly.
